At the award ceremony of the "Golden Palm" for the best trips 2015 on Thursday evening, the taz "Journey to Civil Society" to Athens won the 1st prize in the category "Short, City and Gourmet Trips". Cooperation partner of this Athens trip is "Culterramar", a special tour operator for Southeast Europe, it is led by Rodothea Seralidou, taz writer in Athens since 2011. Rarely, the jury judged, has a city trip so consistently taken up political and social problems and made them vivid.
"Golden Palm" is the name of the much-coveted "Travel Oscars" of the travel magazine GEO SAISON, which are awarded in four categories every year during the ITB tourism fair in Berlin. Since 2008, taz.die tageszeitung has been organizing "trips to civil society" with various tour operators accompanied by its correspondents or authors. These have – as in the case of the city trip to Athens – personal contacts with people who are involved in projects and citizens’ initiatives. In meetings with them, the travelers get to know the vacation country and its social dynamics more intensively. For example, many initiatives have developed in Athens in recent years to defy the economic crisis. Such projects are visited in a 5-day program in Athens.
A taz trip has applied for a "Golden Palm" this year for the first time. In 2015, the taz "Journeys to Civil Society" offer a total of 28 different destinations. Last year, 22 trips took place, with a total of 288 people participating.
